- Check Filters
Inconsistencies in the effective heating and cooling of your home could be due to the filters in your HVAC unit. Daily wear and tear of your HVAC system can result in obstructed and unclean air filters. Dirty filters must be replaced, so your unit can operate efficiently.
Once this is done, you should check and replace your filters on a routine basis. The size of your filter will determine the frequency that they should be changed.
- Clean Debris
It can be easy to forget, but your HVAC system has an outside unit. A troubleshooting step to take when your system is not running consistently is cleaning debris from around your outside unit. Throughout the year and different seasons, leaves fall, and plants grow larger, which can both obstruct the airflow in your unit. Depending upon where the leaves have fallen, you can either reach in and remove them or use a hose to spray the unit.
Ongoing, it is best to maintain a two to three feet plant free zone around your unit.
- Clear Ductwork
Similar to checking and cleaning any debris that has found its way into the outside unit, you need to perform the same check inside your house. If your HVAC system is not operating, examine your screens or grills, ducts, and vents. Again, through usage obstructions can find their way into your HVAC unit.
On a regular basis, be sure there is sufficient airflow for your vents.
- Change Batteries
Another area that can cause issues for your HVAC system are your batteries. If your thermostat is battery operated, the batteries may no longer be working. Check your unit to be sure that the batteries are working. If you are not sure, it is better to put in new batteries before calling a technician.
Annually, when you check your smoke detectors, add all your batteries to your list to change.
