Get crafty this Christmas

Christmas is a magical time for children and why not keep your little ones entertained in the lead up to the big day by partaking in some home crafting activities. There are so many ideas for easy to make decorations and ornaments that all you will need are the materials and a little imagination.  So get yourself and your children out in your garage, put the heating on, put a giant tablecloth down and start crafting.  You should have plenty of room and access to your resources should be easy.  If it’s all over the place get yourself some storage solutions from garage shelving and get your boxes marked up alphabetically.   When garage shelving is used properly it can really be beneficial and save lots of room.

What can be used to make your own Christmas decorations? Soft ball ornaments will look fab hanging from the tree and your kids will love the fact that they have contributed to the tree decorating. They can all look different and are easy to make with fabric pieces. Anything can be used from scraps of leftover material to designer Christmas fabrics.

Another easy project that can be done with your children is pretty paper bulbs made from coloured paper or old magazines. These 3D paper ornaments can be hung across the room or fireplace on string and will keep your youngsters occupied while you enjoy a glass of mulled wine.

Use foam cones to create your very own evergreen forest and give the kids the responsibility of decorating them. They will love gluing on gems, glitter and sparkle. Another fun idea is to create a wreath made from gift bows. You will a styrofoam wreath beforehand and some glue but after that it is incredibly easy to make and looks amazing.

Anything that you create as a family can be kept for generations and become heirlooms. You might even be making these with your grandchildren one day.

Use paper or pom poms to create quirky gift toppers or design your own Christmas cards with embroidery floss to look like hand-stitched vintage cards. Stockings are another simple but effective decoration that can be handmade. You will need felt pieces, pinking shears and thread to sew the pieces together. While you do that, your little ones can design the decoration and cut out the shapes etc. Hang them from the mantelpiece and brighten up the room. The best thing is that they can be used over and over again.

Toilet paper roll snowflakes will be sure to raise a smile and act as a creative way to recycle. You’ll need toilet rolls, a pen, scissors and some hot glue. There are plenty of tutorials online and no limit to your imagination with this design. Another absolute favourite for the kiddies is decorating pine cones. Enjoy a treasure hunt outside and go collecting pine cones. Once home, paint with gold leaf or silver glitter paint to create some serious bling in your decor.
